No doubt that the concerts my brother Joseph, @aka_nedsons took me to as a youth shaped my musical head and heart. It was over 30 years ago, me sitting on his shoulders as close to the stage as you can get at the Richmond Coliseum screaming “RUUUUUUUNS HOUSE” with all I had. Who knew that one day I’d be driving to VA Beach as the opening act for the Hip Hop legend, @revwon! He watched some of our set from the back of the stage, nodding his head and I later snuck on stage during his set to get some video when a friend of his took my phone turning the camera on me. For a second, I looked like 9 year old Josh! If you listen closely that’s exactly what he calls me. Every step we’ve taken is a part of the beautiful journey that has lead us to the place we are now. This one has taken me a while to post because it comes with fading memories, thoughtful reflections and revealing realizations. A beautiful room. The calm before the storm. The last time we played @cvillejefferson we were support for The Wailers. It was an unforgettable night. My mother was so proud. We stood on the stage and took pictures during sound check. She reminisced over times she was in that same theater as a child. She stayed on the stage with us that night. She sat stage right, enjoying the music and the best view of the crowd from her throne as she sipped her water. This night too was special. Charlottesville showed up and we sang and danced all night. I’ve developed a different relationship with music this year. I’ve got a few more road miles and @delta Skymiles than last year. We played fewer shows and each one was really special. It’s been a great year for music! We often get so caught up in doing the thing that we don’t share it with those that weren’t there. Shows this summer were few in part because I spent a month in Kenya, but we also dedicated more time to finishing an album that is long over due. I promise it’ll be worth the wait. What you see here is a poster that we came back to put together by the amazing people at @rivannatrailsfoundation and @rivannarivercompany. This was a magical night. Mark your calendars for April 2! Join us for a special all-day event at Potter's Craft Cider to help us raise $5,000 for Makindu Children's Program. MCP provides foster home placement, education, and nutritional and medical care to hundreds of orphaned and/or vulnerable children in rural Kenya. This all-day event has something for everyone! Join us from 11 am to 4 pm for bluegrass, kids' activities, food from The Little Pig and The Catering Outfit, and the release of a limited-edition cider from Potter’s, created specifically for this event. Potter’s will close it's tasting room at 5 pm and open a cash bar from 5:30 - 10 pm for the evening portion of the event. We’ll be serving up a Kenyan-inspired barbeque dinner before Mighty Joshua takes the stage from 8-10 pm, with special guest @jaredwpool. I love Kenya with my whole heart. This year I was able to see her beauty from Nairobi to Mombasa, to Homa Bay to Kisumu to Makindu, to Laikipia and back! The children at @makinduchildren center are happy, growing and full of gratitude, however the work is never done. The center is more self sustaining than when I was first there in 2010, but the teachers and guardians are working harder than ever. Thanks for your support all these years. I once shared a dream with my brothers to open a record store in Richmond VA… ”3 Brothers 1 Million Records.” @aka_nedsons introduced me to that beautiful sound of needle on vinyl. There’s nothing like it. As time passed it became less about a record store and more of a conscious musical movement. The love of vinyl has stayed and our collection has slowly grown and evolved. We’re not quite at a million, but with the help of some amazing local collectors connecting us to the rest of the world we’re on our way. That voice you hear when you’re at peace and everything else is quiet…Sometimes the advice seems random to you at the moment, but there’s always a connection, a connection that you may not make for years to come. I don’t question the voice anymore. I listen closely, ask for clarity if needed and act on it. My ancestors foraged for their food and medicine. They collected seeds, and spores to grow what they could. Someone told me to try growing my own mushrooms, so I did. They grew and are still growing. Sometimes destruction is necessary in order to rebuild. We will do this many times in our lives and sometimes it won’t be by choice. We may have to destroy in order to save. Let’s not be so attached that we can’t see the blessing in a fresh start...no matter how painful it may be. Where I stand is the remains of a tree that has been there as long as I have. It grew in the front yard that I learned to walk, run, ride a bike, fly a kite in. It’s been there as long as I can remember. This tree was witness to so many things that made us who we are. If it were to remain in this space it would have caused more problems than could be afforded. No matter it’s beauty, no matter my attachment to it, it needed to be removed in order for us to continue growing and that’s not only ok, but necessary. Let’s be brave and let go of what no longer serves us or remove what can even be to our detriment.
